You cannot escape dust and debris when remodeling your house. You should, however, not wait until the project is done to get rid of them. This is because dust can cause respiratory problems and debris is an accident waiting to happen. Some home renovations can take a long time and clean up is a necessity. Below are tips on how to clean up.
Leave the Room or Area Bare
Remove all unnecessary items from the area or room being worked on. This means dust will not accumulate on items like furniture, decorations, and clothing. It is more difficult to wipe out dust from these items and removing them makes it easier to clean the floor and the walls after a remodeling day. Leaving the room bare also helps you avoid accidental damage and accidents.
Cover what cannot be taken out
If there are items that cannot be taken out due to size, function, lack of alternative space or other reasons, cover them with plastic. Covering vanities, large armoire, furniture, and other items prevents debris and dust from getting into the crevices and cracks, and prevents the finishing from getting dull.
Isolate the Room or Area
At Kitchen and Bath, we isolate the areas we are working on to ensure debris and dust do not spread to the rest of the house during home renovations. We do this by using heavy plastic tarps or thick plastic flaps over window and door frames for large projects and affixing plastic sheeting over doors and windows for smaller projects.
Cover up the Path to the Room
Cover the path the contractor is using, especially if the project is in an inner room that is away from the entry door. You can build the path using heavy canvas tarps or carpet scraps. This means dust and mud will not get to the rest of the home. At the end of each day, take the tarps outside and shake them off and stow them away until the next workday.
Clean up after each Work Day
A good contractor will clean up after each work day. You should, therefore, insist that he at least sweeps up and tidies up the area every evening. However, you are still the one who will do most of the cleanup. This should be done daily to prevent dust accumulation.
The most effective way of cleaning up is sweeping, followed by vacuuming and them dusting. Vacuuming before dusting is particularly important for furniture and hardwood floors because it prevents scratching and dulling. The vacuum cleaner should have soft bristles.
Air out the Area
If the weather permits, open window screens and windows while the work is ongoing. This prevents the accumulation of dust, it keeps the home properly ventilated, and it prevents debris and dust from getting caught in the screens’ mesh.
At Kitchen & Bath, we offer a cleanup service after every remodeling day. However, if you want to do the cleanup yourself, we will give you tips on how to go about keeping your home spotless. Call (647)697-7725 to talk to one of our representatives.
