Some home renovations are ideal for certain times of the year. There are several other factors you should consider before embarking on winter renovations if the renovations are to be efficient and effective.
Do Proper Planning
Winter renovations are not to be done on a whim. Lack of proper planning means there will be a risk of going over budget and not finishing the work (or cutting corners) as a consequence, taking on projects that cannot be properly accomplished due to weather conditions, and being at the mercy of the elements while the project is going on due to exposure (such as when there is demolition involved).
Ontario can get very cold and you should always remember that deliveries can be delayed and contractors can fail to access your home. When planning, consider such things as the weather forecast, the cost of materials and other supplies, and where you will be staying during the duration of the project.
Focus on Energy Conservation
Your renovations should focus on energy conservation since energy bills tend to be very high during winter months. You can do this by:
- Switch to solar power: Winters, even in the coldest parts of Ontario, still get enough sunlight to heat water panels. If you are not able to overhaul your entire electrical system, you can still use solar power for solar water heating.
- Consider using pergola with louvers: These louvers when angled and spaced properly, let in the little winter sun for warmth. They also help during hot summer afternoons by blocking out sun rays.
- Minimise reflected heat by paving under the windows that face the sun.
- Install insulation as this keeps hot air in and keeps cold air out. At Kitchen & Bath, we have several high-rated insulation materials available.
- Use light-colored blinds to prevent heat from escaping through the glass and keep internal unused doors closed so they are not unnecessarily heated.
Do not do more than you can handle
Given the adverse weather conditions, winter is not the best time to do major projects. Other than delayed or canceled deliveries, winter weather also means you cannot put furniture, appliances, and other items outside during home renovations.
Do not stock up during winter
Winter is not the best time to stock up. You will not have sufficient space to store the materials and supplies and you also have to consider logistics.
Hire a professional for the job
Home renovations make for great DIY projects, but you should consider hiring a pro for winter renovations because he will have the skills, training, and experience necessary to ensure there is no mishap. The wrong plan or even the wrong storage technique can ruin your whole project. Hiring a pro actually saves you money since you will not need to invest in tools.
Go on Vacation
If for some reason you cannot avoid a major renovation, consider flying south for the sun. This allows the contractor to work uninterrupted and it means your family will not be exposed to dust and debris.
